Thirumurais composed in the first millennium refer to many of the music instruments in vogue at that time. Many of them are still in use even today.

வரந்தையான் சோபுரத்தான் மந்திரத்தான் தந்திரத்தான்
கிரந்தையான் கோவணத்தான் கிண்கிணியான் கையதோர்
சிரந்தையான் செங்காட்டங் குடியான்செஞ் சடைசேருங்
