Shiva Gitimala | Shiva Ashtapadi in English with Meaning

About Shiva Gitimala !! Shiva Ashtapadi:

Shiva Gitimala was composed by Jagadguru Sri Chandra Sekharendra Saraswathi the 62nd seer of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peedam, composed of 20 exciting verses known as Ashtapadi, praising the pleasing moments of Lord Ekamreshwarar and the goddess Sri Kamakshi Devi. This beautiful composition represents the despair, devotion and dedication of the individual soul / Jeevathma, to achieve union with the supreme soul / Paramathma to attain eternal happiness. Shiva Ashtapadi / Shiva Gitimala begins with the veneration of Lord Ganesha. The entire verses illustrate the miserable state of separation of the goddess Parvathi from Lord Shiva. The goddess Sri Parvati underwent severe penance on the banks of the Kampa River to unite with Lord Shiva. The divine couple suffers an unbearable pain of separation; Lord Shiva descended to Earth and resides under a mango tree where the goddess Sri Parvati undertaking penance was observed by a faithful companion of the goddess and was duly informed. The state of remorse, abandonment, guilt and the messages exchanged through the companion of the goddess Sri Parvati, etc. They are beautifully represented in the Ashtapadi. Finally, Lord Shiva appears before the goddess Sri Parvati and apologizes profusely, after a first hardness between the couple and a happy union.

In this verse Sri Chandrasekharendra Yathi beautifully narrates the pleasurable moments of Lord Shiva & Goddess Sri Parvati. Goddess Sri Parvati desirously speaking about the lovely moments and grandeur of Lord Shiva who resides in a hermitage under the mango tree made of creepers. She recollects the all-pervading Lord, vanquisher of Kala/Time whose graceful approach to gratify their desires. She openly declares her affection to Lord Shiva and the gentle breeze which carries enthralling fragrances of water-lilies from him, a simple gaze at His lotus feet would remove illnesses and sufferings. His dexterous and pleasing speeches like nectar would relieve the mental sufferings; she recollects the joyous conversation she had with the Supreme Lord in the backdrop of chirping of cuckoos and his wavering glance through the corner of his eyes resembles cupid arrows of various flowers. The poet remembers the amorous sport between the divine couple in the hermitage under the mango tree. Shiva Ashtapadi !! Thrithiya Sarga: Ashtapadi – 7:

In this verse Sri Chandrasekharendra Yathi describes the pitiable state of Lord Shiva who was undergoing pangs of separation from his consort Goddess Sri Parvati. The supreme Lord whose matted hair locks are adorned by the crescent moon settled in an enchanting garden on the banks of river Kampa and recounts the pleasurable moments with Goddess Sri Parvati. Due to the cupid arrows of Lord Manmatha his auspicious thoughts about Goddess Sri Parvati, daughter of Himavan expressed were become highly propitious. The divine couple, who were equally tormented by the pain of separation remains in a miserable state, Lord Shiva painfully thought about the proud girl, daughter of Kulachala/Himavan who angrily left after a quarrel consequently caused him the victim of Lord Manmatha. Lord Shiva was anxious at the separation Goddess Sri Parvati and withered in burning desires caused by Lord Manmatha. He remembers the pleasurable moments he had with her happily moving around, presently due to the separation he felt intolerable. At certain moments Goddess Sri Parvati in a rage leave him, the compassionate Lord will follow her and pacifies her and brings back into her sportive mood. The moment Goddess Sri Parvati places her lotus feet on the head of Lord Shiva was felt like veneration and experiences the power of Lord Manmatha. Lord Shiva profusely praises Goddess Sri Parvati and pleads to show pity on him. Lord Shiva continuously requests Goddess Sri Parvati who has long dark beautiful hair which has the resemblances of hue of clouds to return to him and show mercy on him.

Shiva…Shiva…May the above verses of grief of Ishwara/Lord Shiva described by Chandrasekharendra Yati, the passionate devotee of Lord Shiva remain the source of perpetual knowledge.

‘Lord Manmatha ! The conqueror of world, it is improper to shower your cupid arrows on a powerless person like me. Lest, you have the enmity due to the calamities caused by me, remember I am completely defeated by the cupid arrows of you. My mind trembles upon on the whizzing of honey bees, chirping of cuckoos and I am shrunken with the pain of burning desires. The shower of flowers of various fragrances of cupid arrows intoxicates; your power of action produces wonderful experience. Lord Manmatha, if you don’t protect me from the pain of separation and the mischief of erratic movement of corner of eyes and showering of white lotuses, then you will have the same state of mine.’

Shiva Ashtapadi !! Ashtapadi – 8:

In this verse Sri Chandrasekharendra Yati describes the pitiable state of Lord Shiva whose matted hair locks decorated with the crescent moon, he was impatiently waiting in his hermitage made of Madhavi creepers under the mango tree in the beautiful garden on the river banks of Kampa. He was extremely distressed due to the separation from his consort. At this point of time, a faithful companion of Goddess Sri Parvati approaches Lord Shiva and explains the miserable state of Goddess Sri Parvati to him.

‘Hara/Shankara/Shiva/ destroyer of Manmatha ! Your Gouri is shrunken with the pain of separation from you. Goddess Sri Gouri who has beautiful long curly black hair bound with decorative strings, her nature of full of life and enthusiasm has reduced to nothing along with her optimistic thoughts, she requires your sole protection. She undergoes the torture of the cupid arrows of Lord Manmatha whenever she retires to bed, while applying auspicious sandal paste from the Mount Malaya on her body she feels unbearable pain as in the midst of blazing fire. She lost interest in wearing ornaments, she refused to wear blue sapphire stone studded necklace, and she refused to listen to the sweet songs of caged parrots in her hermitage. She is constantly in search for you, looking for favorable signs to reunite with you. She is in utter despair from the pain of separation from you. She ignores the affectionate touch of deer’s on her feet and the delightful chirping noises of cuckoos pierce in her ears like painful arrows. She is completely emaciated with the arrows of Lord Manmatha, as a result she refuses to pay attention to the enchanting union of Cuckoos, and she somehow regains her courage, ultimately pretends to be independent. The shining of her beautiful musk on her forehead turns dull, she refuses to stand on the moon light that causes aching all over her body. Her hermitage in the beautiful garden on the river banks of Kamp seems to be terrible forest to her. She repudiates any conversation with her favorite companions due to the pain of separation from you. ’

The above verses of Chandrasekhara Yati, an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva described about the extreme grief of Goddess Sri Gouri excels with humility.

In this verse Sri Chandrasekharendra Yati describes the pangs of separation of Goddess Sri Parvati, eventually this message was delivered through a faithful companion of Goddess Sri Parvati to Lord Shiva.

‘Shiva/Shankara your Shailaja is in utter desolation, she refuses to wear the Gem studded necklace as if it generates flames on her chest, and she feels the bright moonlight torturing her body. She keeps uttering the names of Lord Shiva with extreme anguish. Shailaja disregards the nectar of various fruits as poison; she is completely immersed in your thoughts. You are the companion of suffering people, earnestly prays not to be indifferent to Goddess Sri Shailaja who is in utter despair, if you are not compassionate to her your name Shankara would be meaningless. She refuses to wear invaluable fragrances on her body due to the separation from you. I earnestly request you to show sympathy and affection on her through the corner of your lotus eyes.’

‘Goddess Sri Gouri, you are miserable due to the pain of separation from Lord Shiva, the destroyer of Manmatha also equally dejected watching the honey-bees drinking honey and sporting with their companion. He feels terrible at the touch of gentle breeze due to the pangs of separation from you. He anxiously desires for your company while the honey bees whizzing around him. He feels miserable without you watching the blooming flowers of beautiful spring season. Lord Shiva chants hymn of Veda praising the victory of Lord Manmatha in the midst of unfathomable chirping noises of cuckoos. The pollen of flowers scattered due to the gentle breeze takes refugee on the body of Lord Shiva supplements his pain of separation. The cooling beam of moonlight captures the coldness of his sporting mood; the bed of flowers causes restlessness in him and intense pain of separation from you. Previously Lord Shiva was found immense pleasure in sporting activities with you; in that way he made you feel excited, currently he keeps murmuring your name due to the pain of separation from you and impatiently looking forward the bliss of reunion.

In this verse Sri Chandrashekhara Yathi describes the dialogues of the faithful assistant of Goddess Sri Parvati to the Mother of the Universe “ Oh ! Goddess Sri Parvathi, you are immersed in the thought of the charismatic form of Lord Shiva who has the brilliance of millions of Manmathas, beautiful third eye on his forehead and it has the power to crush the ego of young maidens, he is settled in a garden on the river banks of Kampa. Your compassionate consort of Lord Shiva is in a miserable state due to the pangs of separation from you and cries to remove the afflictions caused by Lord Manmatha at the time of gentle breeze splatter on his body. He experiences the strong fragrances of scented water with solid camphor on his body when the gentle breeze from the Mount Malaya embraces him; due to the irresistible pain he curses Lord Manmatha. Lord Manmatha exemplifies appealing pictures of you was witnessed with a spontaneous delight by him was distracted by the gentle breeze from Mount Malaya. Lord Shiva expresses his grief looking at your marvelous features, pleading your presence which would help him to recover from the pain of separation and raise his spirits on your raised bosoms. Your little voice while singing along with the cuckoos reveals the utter grief in you. The sparkling waters of river Kampa and the sweet scented pollen from the lotuses wedged on the chest of Lord Shiva increases the pain in him; he did not even realize the dripping waters from Ganga from his matted hair locks. The beautiful eyed Goddess Sri Parvati, your consort is in utter desolation due to the separation from you and every second seems to be Yuga and Kalpa for him, his silly mistakes committed seems to be serious for him, therefore shower mercy on him.” Goddess Sri Parvati after listening to the wretched state of Lord Shiva caused by Lord Manmatha described by her companion, the mother of Universe immediately entered in to her creeper hermitage with graceful steps and a pleasing smile on her lips. The faithful companion who was in the midst of the sporting fight between the divine couple sincerely wished for the reunion of the couple and their happiness. Shiva Ashtapadi !! Tryodashashtapadi : Ashtapadi – 13:

In this verse, Sri Chandrasekhara Yathi describes the grief of Goddess Sri Parvati due to the separation from Lord Shiva. The moon realized the acute pain of separation of the divine couple, scattered it rays all over the attractive places located on the river banks of Kampa. Goddess Sri Parvati was in a depressing state anxiously waiting for the arrival of her consort, soon she realized the absence of her Lord, she dejectedly speaking to her companion “My yearning to put an end to this long sufferings due to the separation from Lord Shiva is not bringing any fruitful result. I am totally neglected by him. I am always bearing his thoughts in me and my entire happiness lies in him, he did not see my presence yet. The abundance of pollen of flowers from the Mount Malaya is scattered all over, I am intentionally abandoned by him in his pleasurable company. Lord Shiva, whose lotus feet are capable to grant all the boons to the worshipper, he is indifferent to me unlike my deity, he disregarded my aching heart for him. Lord Shiva, whose feet are adorned by the pinnacle of Vedas/Upanishads and provides immense delight in the minds of sages, fails to provide me happiness. Lord Shiva, who is the remover of all fears and grief was repeatedly remembered by my aching heart during the times of separation, up till now was not able to be seen by me. Though I am enriched with all the goodness, my life will be fruitful only with his passionate touches during amorous sport.”

The above verses of Sri Chandrasekhara Yathi describes the desperation of Goddess Sri Parvati from the separation from her consort Lord Shiva would destroy the fear of accumulated sins of the worshipper.

Ultimately, Goddess Sri Parvati, mother of the Universe was completely dejected to see her faithful companion returning without Lord Shiva. She suspects that her consort is occupied with some other young maiden and pouring out harsh words of unhappiness in utter despair.

Shiva Ashtapadi !! Sapthadashashtapadi – Ashtapadi 17:

In the previous chapters Sri Chandrasekharendra Yathi described the pitiable state of Goddess Sri Parvati due to the pain of separation from her consort Lord Shiva, eventually her misconception about Lord’s amorous sport with the young maiden. She was extremely annoyed by the lack of attention of Lord Shiva; she was shrunken by the cupid flower arrows of Lord Manmatha and converse in extreme bitterness with her faithful companion. Ultimately, Goddess Sri Parvati realized the presence of Lord who leans down before her with a proposal to alleviate the felony committed by him.

Goddess Sri Parvati angrily spoke “Your red eyes unveils the story of the amorous sport with the young maiden, you still protect her in your third eye due to the obsession towards her and the pleasure she had given which is like nectar mixed with poison which is far from Vedic nuance. The flower garland smeared with vermillion due to the nearness of her raised bosom on your wide chest reveals the amorous sport you had with the young maiden, marks of her sharp finger nails all over your body reveals the excitement you had during the passionate sport. The crescent moon has changed its position on your matted hair locks, your beautiful lips and mouth has become red in color shows the height of your passionate love with the young maiden and it raises my anger. You are immersed in the thought of her enthralling red feet which caused you shine red reveals your uncontrollable attachment towards her. Your kind words remind me the pleasurable moment of yours with the young maiden and it is haunting me. Your shattered matted hair locks tied with the strings of flowers of Kalpaka tree shows the mischievous and passionate sport of yours. “ Goddess Sri Parvati closely observes the strange appearance of Lord Shiva before her and misread them as evident mark of Lord’s passionate sport with the young maiden.

The above verses of Chandrasekharendra Yathi, ardent devotee of Lord Shiva describes the appearance of Lord Shiva before Goddess Sri Parvati would bring happiness to wise.
