According to Hindu mythology, there is story about how Rahu and Ketu came into existence. Gods and demons had mutually agreed to produce amrita [nectar causing them to be immortal]. This amrita could be obtained only by churning the ocean. The amrita was obtained and it was distributed to the Gods. A demon disguised as God sat between Sun and Moon to take amrita. However, Sun and Moon recognised the demon and complained to Lord Vishnu. On hearing, Lord Vishnu threw Sudarshan Chakra at the demon that became two pieces. However, since the demon had taken enough amrita so demon could not be killed. Head of the demon was known as Rahu and lower half was known as Ketu. Ever since that day, Rahu and Ketu became enemies of the Sun and the Moon.
