Sri Lokanarkavu Temple Timings, History, Dress Code

Lokanarkavu Temple or Lokamalayarkavu Temple is an ancient Hindu temple situated in Memunda village, Vatakara, Kozhikode, North Malabar region of Kerala. The temple is dedicated to goddess Lokanarkavil Amman also known as goddess Durga. The temple also shows two sub-shrines dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Lokanarkavu is a short form of Lokamalayarkavu which means Lokam (world) made of mala (mountain), aaru (river) and kavu (grove). According to Puranas, the main temple is 1500 years old.

Pooram is an important festival here and it is performed with great pomp and spectacle. The week-long festival begins with Kodiyettam (raising the flag) and ends with Arattu. The temple dedicated to Goddess Durga is of great historical significance as Thacholi Othenan, the legendary martial hero of Kerala, worshiped here every day.

Thirty days Mandala Utsavam in Malayalam month Vrischikam (November-December) and Pooram in Malayalam month Meenam (March-April) and Navaratri are the annual festivals at Lokanarkavu Bhagavathy temple. It is the only temple where a particular folk dance called Poorakkali is performed during festivals. The dance resembles the martial art Kalarippayattu. Even today, all performers of Kalaripayattu seek the blessings of divinity before their debut due to the association of Lokanarkavu Temple with the legendary hero Thacholi Othenan.

Sri Lokanarkavu Temple Dress Code: A strict dress code is followed Like most other Kerala temples, here too the dress code bans trousers, churidars, jeans, frocks, skirts or any other modern clothes.Lokanarkavu Temple
