Nehru Zoological Park, in Hyderabad had been named after the first Prime Minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru. Though established in itself, it could be opened to the public only on the 6th day of October in 1963.
Spread over a vast area of more than 380 acres of land in Hyderabad, the zoo houses many rare and endangered species of animals. It is located adjacent to the popular Mir Alam Tank, Bahadurpur in Hyderabad. The Mir Alam Tank is also a famous place to be visited in Hyderabad.
The Nehru Zoological Park also known as the Hyderabad Park has the record of being the first such park in the country to have the animals arranged in zoological order in open enclosures. Animals in the zoo or the park as it is called are kept in open enclosures providing them the natural ambience needed. Such a method of keeping animals in open enclosures makes them feel at home. This is also helpful in their breeding. It also helps the researchers in the study of the animal behavior. The Zoological Park has successfully bred many indigenous animals.
The Park houses more than 1200 animals and 100 different species giving them an artificially created habitat but ensuring that they do have a feel that they are in their own natural habitat. Many species of animals, birds and reptiles are present in this zoo. Species like Tigers, Lions, Chimpanzees, Panthers, White peacocks, Rhinoceros, Mynahs, Deer, Tortoise, Antelopes, Crocodiles, snakes like Python, Gaur and various other kind of birds are present in Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad. Both the breeds of Lions i.e. the African as well as the Indian Lions are the attraction here. Other attractions in the zoo are the panthers and the rare white tigers. The park is maintained by the Forest Department.
Taking the visitors inconveniences in moving around in the zoo, the new facility of Battery operated car (go-karts) has been started in the zoo to take the visitors around the zoo to different areas. This new battery operated car can accommodate 10 people and is available at a minimal charge of Rs.40 per person. Such a system is also eco-friendly. The animals in the zoo are also not affected by these cars. A train track is also present in this zoo to take the visitors around the zoo. The charges for this train is just Rs.15 per person.
Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad runs Jungle Safari in open top Jeep as well. The experience in these open jeeps are more welcoming and exciting. Other such exciting facilities available at the zoo are the Elephant rides and Maharaja Elephant rides.
Apart from seeing the animals and birds in their more or less natural habitat, this place is also famous as a convenient family picnic spot. The zoo opens to the public at 9am every day. One must visit the zoo early and walk around to enjoy the ambience of the animals.
