Magh Mela is an auspicious annual Hindu ritual that takes place in the month of Magh. It is also called mini Kumbh Mela. It is celebrated in the month of Magh according to the Hindu calendar, which falls in January or February. However, Magh Mela is not limited to the month of Magh alone and important bathing dates span a period of 45 days. It is believed that taking a holy bath in the Sangam on auspicious days of the period washes away sins and leads to Moksha.
The venue for this festival is Sangam in Allahabad, which is the confluence of three rivers, Yamuna, Saraswati and Ganga. During the Mela, various cultural events take place. Dramatic performances of Hindu epics and Puranas, bhajans, music and dance performances and folk theater are part of the grand spectacle. Many organizers offer free food and accommodation to sadhus and people from all over the country.
This year Magh Mela starts on 14 January.
