Trichy Uchi Pillayar temple also known as Arulmigu Thayumana Swamy Temple is a popular temple dedicated to Sri Vinayaka located on the Rock Fort temple complex in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. The Rockfort temple complex has three shrines, two of which are dedicated to Sri Ganesha and Manikka Vinayagar Temple at the foot and Ucchi Pillayar Temple at the top Thayumanavar Temple between them. The Thayumanavar temple, the largest of the three, houses a shrine for Amman (the Goddess) as well as the main deity God Shiva. Mythologically, this rock is the place where Sri Ganesh fled from King Vibishana, after having established the Sri Ranganatha Swamy deity in Srirangam.
According to epigraphic evidence, the hill fort temple was built under the Mahendra Pallava-Gunaparan in the 6th century. The Uchi Pillaiyar temple is situated on the top of Rock Fort Hill. Trichy Uchi Pillayar Temple sanctuary is at a height of 273 feet and one has to climb over 400 steps to reach the temple. One has to cross Sri Thayumanavar temple, which is located halfway up. Although climbing is a bit difficult, the gentle breeze refreshes our energy to climb without too much stress. A panoramic view of the whole Tiruchirappalli and Srirangam temple from the Uchi Vinayakar temple is simply incredible.

Ucchi Pillayar Temple History:
When Sri Rama returned to Ayodhya after saving Sita Devi from Ravana’s captivity, Sugriva, Hanuman and Vibishana accompanied the Lord to participate in the coronation function of the Lord. Returning with the gift of the Sri Ranganatha idol from Sri Rama, Vibishana came to the south. Seeing the beauty of the Cauvery River and the beautiful environment, he wanted to relax for a while. Lord Vinayaka was there, disguised as a little boy. Vibishana asked the boy to take back the idol of Lord Ranganatha. After waiting for Vibishana, the boy placed the idol on the ground and hid on the hill.
Vibhishana was surprised to see the boy missing. He applied all of his energy to move the idol but failed. Thus, Lord Ranganatha, bound for Sri Lanka, shortened his journey and chose Sri Rangam as his home. Seeing the boy at the top of the hill, Vibishana hit him on the head, whose scar is still visible on the idol of Vinayaka. Therefore, Lord Vinayaka and Lord Ranganatha nearby govern us with grace.
A furious competition arose between Adisesha and Vayu to decide on the supremacy of their competence. The condition was to violently shake Mount Kailash. While beating Adisesha, when Vayu broke the mount, a part fell here. The demon Tirishira (three-headed demon) was in penance for Lord Shiva. Although many years have passed, Lord Shiva has delayed his darshan to test his purity.
He threw two of his heads into the fire and was about to throw the third, the Lord appeared before him and restored his head. As he requested, Lord Shiva agreed to stay here on behalf of Thirisira Nathar (based on the story of the demon Tirishira). The place is known as Tirishiramalai, now changed to Tiruchy.
