Tirukattupalli Agneeswarar Swamy Temple or Theeyadiappar Temple is located on the southern bank of the river Kudamurutti in Thirukattupalli, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity is Lord Agneeswara(Lord Shiva) is Swayambu Linga, the Linga size is very small with five Cobras on his head. Sri Vishnu is in a separate shrine and worshipped as Srinivasa Perumal. This temple was constructed by Chola I and renovated during the rule of Uthama Cholan. This Temple is the 126th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 9th Sthalam.
In the Navagraha shrine (9 Planets) against the general traditions, all the planets are facing the Sun planet. As Agni (God of Fire) worshipped, the temple is named Agneeswaram. Lord Brahma the Creator, Sun Bhagwan, Bagiratha and Queen of Urayur worshipped Lord in the temple. Four Pujas are conducted in a day. Water is brought from Cauvery for Panguni Uthiram festival.
Other Deities are Kasi Viswanatha, Lord Vinayaka, Lord Arthanareeswara, Lord Muruga with his consorts Valli and Deivanai, Kasi Viswanatha with Mother Visalakshi, Gajalakshmi, Goddess Soundaravalli, Durga and Dhakshanamurthy. Lord Brahma has a separate shrine on the left side of Agneeswarar. Surya Theertham, Kudamurutti river, Agnitheertham is in the form of a well. Vanni and Vilwa are the temple trees. Tirukattupalli Agneeswarar Temple History:
The story goes that a servant of the king of Urayur brought Sevvandhi flowers for Shiva Puja and gave them to the king. The king, in turn, gave them to his two wives. The elder woman offered it to Lord Shiva while the other put it on her head. As Tirukattupalli, where the first wife lived, became famous, Urayur, where the second wife lived, experienced destruction.
