About Samaveda Upakarma:
On Samaveda Upakarma day, people of Brahmin community ritually change their Upanayana thread accompanied by Shrauta rituals. Upakarma is an ancient Vedic ritual still practiced by Hindus of Brahmin caste.
In Tamil Nadu, Upakarma is known as Avani Avittam. Gayathri Japam is performed on the next day of Avani Avittam. This Festival is celebrated by Samaveda Brahmins in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
In Tamil Nadu, Upakarima is known as Avani Avittam”. Majority of the Brahmins (Non-Samavedis) refer to the Upakarma day as Avani Avittam (Dhanishta Nakshatra in the Tamil month of Avani)”. This is true only for Rig Vedis and Yajur Vedis. Sama Vedis observe Upakarma on Ganesh Chaturthi and there are few or no Brahmins of Atharva Beda in Tamil Nadu.
