2022 Chaturmasya Vrat Begins on 10th July and ends on 5th November 2022.
Chaturmas is observed for a period of four months. The name chaturmas indicates four months. Chatur means four and masa means month. The chaturmas begin on Ashada sukla Ekadashi, also known as sayana Ekadashi, and continue to karthika sukla Ekadashi, also known as uttahana Ekadashi. The four months of Shravan, Bhadrapad, Ashwina and Kartik are considered the holiest months in the Hindu calendar.
It is believed that Lord Vishnu sleeps on this day, therefore the eleventh day of Ashadh is called Devashayani Ekadashi. It is believed that the eleventh of Kartik awakens, which is why it is called Prabodhini Ekadashi. The period corresponds to the rainy season in India.
Chaturmas History:
Goddess Lakshmi once complained to Sri Vishnu that while he slept for an insufficient period of time, all the Devas had to wait for him to wake up so they could discuss their problems. The reason is that sometimes the time frame continues for a long period of time. Therefore, Goddess Laxmi asked Lord Vishnu to fix a time to sleep, so that no one would wait for him.
Sri Maha Vishnu accepted her suggestion and decided to sleep for a period of four months. Therefore, Lord Vishnu’s sleep is also called Yoga Nidra, starting with Devshayani Ekadashi and ending with Dev Uthani Ekadashi. Sri Vishnu also said that if anyone worship him during this period of sleep, the person would get immense blessings. Moreover, he will always stay at home with Goddess Lakshmi in Chaturmas.
