Rameswaram Ramanathaswamy Temple is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to the god Shiva. It is located on the Pamban Islands, in the Gulf of Mannar in Tamil Nadu. This temple is important as it’s one of the twelve Jyotirlinga temples. It’s also recognized as one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, where important Saivite saints like Appar, Sundarar, and Tirugnana Sambandar, have praised the temple with their songs.
The temple grew larger during the 12th century under the Pandya Dynasty. The main part of the temple was fixed up by monarchs Jeyaveera Cinkaiariyan and Gunaveera Cinkaiariyan from the Jaffna kingdom. This temple has the longest passage among all Hindu temples in India. King Muthuramalinga Sethupathiy was the one who built it. People of different beliefs, like Shaivites, Vaishnavites, and Smarthas, consider this temple a holy site. According to legends, the main deity, the Lingam of Ramanathaswamy (Shiva), was established and honored by Rama before he crossed the bridge to present-day Sri Lanka. This temple is also part of the Char Dham pilgrimage places.
Arulmigu Rameswaram Ramanathaswamy Temple is also known as Rameswaram Temple.
Rameswaram Shiva temple is part of the Char Dham, which are four very important Hindu sites. These four sites are Badrinath, Puri, Dwarka, and Rameshwaram. They are like special places across India. In the North, there's Badrinath Temple, in the East is Jagannath Temple at Puri, in the West is Dwarakadheesh Temple at Dwarka, and in the South is Ramanathaswamy Temple at Rameswaram.

Rameswaram Temple Tanks:
There are sixty-four Tīrthas (holy water bodies) in and around Rameswaram island, there are sixty-four special places with holy water called Tīrthas. Among them, twenty-four are really important, as said in the Skanda Puraṇa. Taking a bath in these Tīrthas is a big part of the pilgrimage to Rameswaram and is like doing penance. Out of these, twenty-two Tīrthas are inside the Ramanathasvami Temple. This number, 22, stands for the 22 arrows Rama had. The first and biggest one is called Agni Theertham, and it’s the sea (Bay of Bengal).
Rameswaram Temple is quite special because it’s one of the few temples where the holy place, the main deity, and the water bodies are all connected. The Ramanathaswamy Temple Theertham is very important. There are 22 Theerthams in the shape of ponds and wells. These 22 Theerthams are like the 22 arrows Rama had.
