Chitra Pournami

About Chitra Pournami:
Chitra Pournami is a popular Tamil festival observed during full moon day in the Tamil month of Chithirai. Chitra Pournami is the day for worshipping Chitragupta and is regarded as an important event for women.

Chitragupta was originally born to Goddess Parvati in the form of a painting or chitira. Later he entered into the womb of Gomatha Kamdhenu and born on the day of Chitra Pournami and got the name Chitragupta. He was believed to be the assistant of Yamadharma, the god of death, in accounting the good and bad activities of people.

It is a custom to worship him with chakkarai pongal and other delicacies without salt, which will give immense happiness to the whole family throughout the year.

Devotees should avoid consuming milk and milk-products on that day since he was born to Kamadhenu. One can take buffalo milk, if necessary. After finishing usual pooja and rituals the devotees have to donate rice, vegetables, dhal and dakshina in a “Muram” (a sieve made of bamboo mesh or plastic).

Some people will draw a kolam at the entrance, leaving the south side alone empty. After pooja rituals the kolam will be wiped immediately.

It is significant to worship Ambal in pournami. Since Chithra pournami is significant for Meenakshi Amman and Kallazhagar, worshipping them will also give benefits.
