Sri Sri Radha Gopinath Temple History:

Today Sri Sri Radha Gopinath Mandir is beautifully located in the locality of South Mumbai, but its beginning was very simple and humble. The seed was planted when the trustees of Lady Northcote Hindu Orphanage (LNHO), under the chairmanship of Sri Arvind N. Mafatlal, invited the faithful to help run the orphanage in the lines of the traditional Gurukul system. Dr. N. D. Desai (Brother G. Sri Nathji Das) was then the administrator of the LNHO. The trustees gave ISKCON a small room in the back. Some faithful came to stay here in this small space with their few belongings.

Sri Sri Radha Gopinath settled on July 17, 1988 in a grand ceremony with more than 400 people present at the ceremony. It was the fulfillment of the prophecy made by Srila Prabhupada. In 1971, when Srila Prabhupada on the steps of neighboring Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, told his secretary Shyamasundar Prabhu, his cane pointing to this area where he is now the temple, “We must have a temple here. Indeed, Lord Krishna fulfilled the desire of His pure devotee.

It was clear that Lord Yuga-avatar Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Lord Nityananda Prabhu would soon be appearing in the temple. Indeed, Sri Sri Gaurachandra with Sri Gopalji A Prabhupada deity was also installed by ISKCON standards officially established in 1990. Then came cows, parrots, peacocks and monkeys on the altar and created an atmosphere imbued with simplicity and sweetness of Vrindavan.

Since then, the temple has undergone several stages of renovation. Since placing a whole new base in the current structure, to strengthen the wooden floor of the temple hall with iron beams, to embellish the outside of the temple hall, they also reamueblaron with beautiful Italian marble. Later, the altar and the entire hall of the temple were decorated with beautiful wood carvings. On the ground floor, the Bhaktivedanta Room has a new white marble floor and Makarana walls were clad in top quality teak veneer. The wooden floor in the main room of the temple has also been replaced by Burmese teak wood. The temple is also one of the few in India that has an air-conditioned room.

The beautiful structure we see today has developed through the hard work and dedication of many devotees. These devotees worked tirelessly to realize the vision of Swami Maharaj H.H Radhanatha who firmly follow the path and instructions given by Srila Prabhupada. And so, what began as a simple room has now become a beautiful home for his lordships, Sri Sri Radha Gopinath.
