Although designed and built in the 1980s, its design is a combination of the traditional, the contemporary and the futuristic; and, at the same time, a fusion of concepts that show “East and West”. The ancient formula “vastu purusha mandala” is imbued in its geometric design with shapes such as circles, triangles, squares and octagons, with a great spiritual symbolism and a philosophical significance reinforced by its unique environment in the middle of a pit. water and water, surrounded by a vast lotus-shaped garden expanding.
In 1975, His Divine Grace A. C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Acharya founder of the International Society for the Consciousness of Krishna popularly known as ISKCON in his only visit to South Africa, asked his followers to build a temple. Taking these instructions seriously, a team of enthusiasts has worked tirelessly and faces many daunting challenges, including apartheid policies of the government in power.
