Thrissur Pooram is a world famous temple festival of Kerala, celebrated annually at the premises of Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur. This festival is celebrated on Pooram day, when the moon rises with the Pooram Nakshatra in the Malayalam month of Medam. This Pooram festival is the largest and most famous of all Poorams in India.
On the pooram festival day, various temples in and around Thrissur city are invited with their deities to the heart of Thrissur city to pay homage to Lord Vadakkunnathan, who is the presiding deity of the Vadakkunnathan Temple. A huge procession is organized at temple premises accompanied by Kerala’s traditional music of Chenda Melam and Pancha Vadyam.
More than 50 caparisoned elephants decorated with various golden ornaments line up on the temple ground amidst music, cultural programs, art forms, and amazing fireworks, with a participation of millions of people from all over the country and abroad.
