Villivakkam Sri Agastheeswar Swamy Temple History:

During Lord Shiva’s marriage with Mother Parvathi on Mount Kailas, sage Agasthya was in the south performing Shiva Puja here. Two demon brothers Vilvalan and Vatapi disturbed his pooja. Agasthya killed them with hir power of penance and incurred Brahmmahati dosha, a sin caused by killing others, good or bad. He worshiped Lord Shiva here for the relief of the dosha and also for the relief of any disturbance to perform his pujas. Lord sent Veerabadra to help the sage. Lord Veerabadra protected the sage Agasthya and also freed the sage from the dosha. Therefore, he has his rightful place in the temple. As the sage Agasthya worshiped the Lord here, he is praised as Lord Agastheeswarar and is the deity who presides over the temple.
