Goddess Matangi is the ninth of the ten Mahavidya Goddesses or ten Tantric goddesses. Like Goddess Saraswati, She is a ferocious aspect of the Divine Mother Durga. She is said to be the Tantric form of Sarasvati who is the goddess of art, music and learning. She governs speech, knowledge, music and the arts. Worshipping Her one gets supernatural powers mainly gaining control over opponents, attracting people to oneself and gaining mastery over arts and attaining supreme knowledge.

Goddess Matangi is compared with Goddess Saraswati, She is often associated with pollution and impurity. She is considered an embodiment of Ucchishta (उच्छिष्ट) which means leftover food in hands and the mouth. Hence, She is also known as Ucchishta Chandalini and Ucchishta Matangini. She is described as an outcaste and offered left-over and partially eaten food i.e. Ucchishta to seek her blessings.

She is seated on an altar and has a smiling face and a green complexion. Her eyes are intoxicated. Her clothes and all of Her ornaments are red. Around Her neck is a garland of kadamba flowers. She is sixteen years old and has very full breasts and a very slim waist. She holds a skull on Her left side and a bloodied chopping blade on Her right, And She plays a jewel-encrusted veena. Her hair is long and wild, and the disc of the moon adorns Her forehead. She perspires slightly around Her face, which makes Her all the more beautiful and bright. Below Her navel are three horizontal folds of skin and a thin vertical line of fine hair. She wears a girdle of jeweled ornaments, as well as bracelets, armlets, and earrings. She represents the 64 arts and She is flanked by two parrots.

Matangi Origin:- There are several legends which are associated with Goddess Matangi. Once, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi visited Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. A feast was arranged by Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in honor of visiting couple.

While eating, the deities dropped some of the food on the ground. A beautiful maiden arose from dropped food who asked for their left-overs. The four deities granted her their left-overs as Prasad.

Matangi Iconography:- Goddess Matangi is often represented as emerald green in complexion. Goddess Matangi is depicted with four arms in which She holds a noose, sword, goad and a club. She is portrayed in red dress and adorned with golden jewelry. She is shown sitting on a golden seat. In Raja Matangi form, She is portrayed with the Veena along with a parrot.

Matangi Sadhana:- Goddess Matangi Sadhana is prescribed to acquire supernatural powers, especially gaining control over enemies, attracting people to oneself, acquiring mastery over the arts and gaining supreme knowledge.

ॐ शुक्रप्रियायै विद्महे श्रीकामेश्वर्यै धीमहि तन्नः श्यामा प्रचोदयात्॥

Goddess Matangi Devi Temples:

1) Belgam: It is the district headquarter city of the Karnataka State. Matangi Mata Temple is here in Tilakwadi. This temple is just 1.4km from Belgam Railway Station. Belgam is 102kms from Hubli.

2) Madanapalle: It is a municipal town in Chittore district of Andhra Pradesh State. Mathanghi Temple is here in Nuthi Radhakrishnaiah Nagar. This temple is just beside the RTC Bustand of Madanapalle. Madanapalle is 113kms from Tirupati and 26kms from Punganur.

3) Nangur: It is a Vaishnavaite pilgrime centre near Sirkazhi in Nagapatnam district of Tamil nadu State. Raja Mathangi Temple is here near Kudamadu Kuthar Temple. Nangur is just 10kms from Sirkalazhi.

4) Jhabua:It is a district headquarter town in Madhya Pradesh State. Mathngi Darshn (Temple) is here near Krishi Vignan Kendra. This temple is 2.5kms from Jhabua Bus Stand. Jhabua is 150kms from indore on Dahod road, and 45kms from Dahod.
