Charminar, located in the Khilwat area of Hyderabad has become the global icon for the city. The landmark is as important to the city as is the Taj to Agra. Built in Islamic architecture, the monument has stood firm over 4 centuries watching the changing faces of the rulers in the city.
The monument was built by the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in the year 1591. This was only after he shifted his base from Golkonda to the current old city. The Charminar is the first such construction by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah after he shifted his capital to the present day old Hyderabad which is some 5 kms away from the erthwhile capital of Golkonda.
Two very popular legends are known behind the construction of this monument. One of them says that the Shah built this structure for the honor of his wife, Bhagyamathi also known as Bhagmathi. There is another story going round the corners about the construction of this structure. It is said that this was built to eradicate the disease Plague which had spread at that time and was causing grievous damages in the city.
On a visit to the structure, one can easily make out that the monument got its name from the four minars in the structure. These minars, also known as minarets in English stand at a height of 48.7 meters. The structure is a square shaped one running into an area of 20 x 20 meters. The minars have 149 widening steps inside in 4 levels to reach the top. This Islamic style monument is made of granite, mortar, limestone and marble.
One can have the complete undisturbing view of the entire city from the top of Charminar. The mosque at the western side on the top of the monument has 45 prayer spaces. The four arches made by the minars of the structure open to four different streets in the city. Charminar is surrounded by many old markets famous for Lakh bangles and pearls. This area is quite a shopping zone with the Laad Bazaar and Pather Gatti being famous amongst them. There are other religious places as well near the monument.
Masjids which are alike the Mecca and Jama Masjids are also present nearby. Hence the area is busier in the Ramzan time.
The night view of the structure is heart throbbing. The lighting done to it make it stand out amidst the busy city.
