Cheruvugattu Shiva Temple History:

It is said that when the sage Parashuram left to avenge the death of Kartavirys, Haiyas beheaded the sage Jamadhagni. When this was learned by Parsuram, he returned to the Asharam. There were a total of twenty-one injuries due to arrows on the deceased’s body. It is believed that Parashuraman had sworn that he would kill the cruel Kshathriyas and then return to do penance on the mountain of Mahebra. During the rise of the evil warriors, Parsurama would return and kill them. The sage has circumnavigated the earth 21 times to penalize and cleanse the land of the evil Kshartiyas. The sage Parsurama built temples of deities who varied in different territories. He did this by going around the earth 21 times. In doing so, he installed 108 worthy temples for the devotees to do penance.
