Chicago Sri Venkateswara Swami Temple History

Thousands of devotees from the Midwestern states, especially from Chicago, traveled to Pittsburgh to do the Swami of Sri Venkateswara darshan. While the experience was spiritually rewarding, the time and effort required to make the trip made it difficult for many to have their darshan as often as their hearts desired. Many have felt a void in their spiritual life and their discontent has become widespread. The situation continued until 1985. Following the philanthropy of nine families who gave 20 acres of land with a farm in Aurora (a suburb of western Chicago), as a site for the proposed Balaji temple, a beginning was done in the realization of a dream of many. Since the temple of Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) is an institution that must serve countless generations to come, the plans have been developed on a large scale according to the available means and needs of the moment. Every effort has been made to ensure that their designs meet dynamic space requirements, while at the same time ensuring compliance with local building codes, structural safety standards, and community needs.

Padmasri Mr.Muthiah Sthapathy, a leading expert in temple building in India, collaborated with Sri Subhash Nadkarni, a famous Chicago architect and devotee of Balaji, and together they designed the temple. This design is an excellent combination of the ancient Shilpa shastra and modern architectural technology. This design also served as a model for other temples that were later built in the United States. A unique feature of the temple is the circumambulation (pradakshina) layout inside the temple, not only around the presiding deity, but also around the main sanctuaries in the temple.
