Magha is a Sanskrit word meaning ma- not present, agha – sin. Hindus believe that the Goddess of Education Lord Shiva, Saraswathi Devi and Surya Bhagwan were born in the form of Linga. Puranas mentioned that the prominence of Magha Snanam in the rivers is very auspicious.
Many Important festivals like Maha Shivaratri, Rathasapthami, Bhishma Ashtami, Magha Pournami, Vasantha Panchami are celebrated this month. Special pujas are performed for Surya Bhagavan this month. In some areas Magha Masa Adivarala Nomu is performed. Devotees believe bathing in rivers with cold water gives a healthy body and relieves skin problems, blood pressure and other tensions. Bathing in seas and rivers will have medicinal benefits.
