What is Mantra Meditation ?
There are two types of mantra meditation, Japa and Kirtan. Japa is a quiet and personal meditation where one chants on beads. Kirtan, on the other hand, is the singing of mantras with others, often with musical instruments.

Japa is counted on a japa mala, the sanskrit word for prayer beads. These beads are used to count the number of mantras chanted. One chants the Hare Krishna mantra on each of the 108 beads of the mala to complete ‘a round’. The focus while chanting is to hear the sound of the mantra. If the mind wanders to other thoughts (which it will!) gently bring it back on the mantra. Though one can chant japa at any time of the day, the morning hours around dawn are recommended. The stillness and peace compliment focused and contemplative chanting.

Kirtan is another way to practice mantra meditation. There are lots of types of kirtan. Some can be quiet and soothing, some more energetic. The Hare Krishna mantra is made up of three words – Hare, Krishna, and Rama:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare

What is Bhakti Yoga ?
The Bhagavad-gita describes a variety of yoga practices. Among them are Karma-yoga (the practice of conscious act(on), Jnana-yoga (the study of philosophy and contemplat(on) and Hatha-yoga (the practice of yoga-asanas and breathing exercises).

The Gita ultimately prescribes bhakti yoga (the path of dedication and love); it is the culmination of these other yoga practices. Bhakti Yoga focuses on developing our dedication, our service and our love for the supreme being, Krishna.

Mantra mediation is one of the key practices of a bhakti yogi. This is done through japa (quiet chanting on beads) and kirtan (musical chanting in groups). Our connection and relationship with Krishna is developed through the chanting of the maha mantra.

The chanting cleanses the heart, calms the mind, and inspires a life of purpose and meaning.

Who is Srila Prabhupada?
Srila Prabhupada is the founding spiritual master (Acarya) of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). His books (translated from the original Sanskrit) and teachings serve as ISKCON’s guiding principles.

He set out from India to teach Bhakti Yoga in the western world. From a small store front in New York City in 1966, a movement blossomed all over the world. Temples, schools, farms, and restaurants developed under his guidance and direction. In eleven years he circled the globe fourteen times, met scholars and statesmen, and inspired men and women from all walks of life to take to Krishna Consciousness.

Stilt Prabhupada left this world in 1977. He touched the hearts of those he met and left a legacy of spiritual teachings that continue to inspire dedication and devotion throughout the world.

Who is Krishna ?
In the philosophy of Bhakti Yoga, the Absolute Truth is known as a person. His name is Krishna, a Sanskrit word which means “all attractive”.

Krishna is a beautiful youth with a glowing complexion the color of rain clouds. He plays a flute, attracting the hearts of all, and His smile is enchanting. He wears a peacock feather in His curly black hair and a flower garland around His neck.

Through the practice of Bhakti Yoga we can develop our personal relationship with Krishna.
