Nizam Sagar Dam is the oldest reservoir built on the Manjira River, a tributary of the Godavari River, between Achampet and BanjePally villages of Kamareddy district, Telangana. The dam was named after the Nizam of Hyderabad. It is located about 144 km northwest of Hyderabad. The Nizam Sagar Dam is also one of the largest in the world.
The massive masonry dam spans a distance of 3 km and includes a passable road 14 feet wide. This facilitates the easy passage of small vehicles and is probably one of the most striking architectures of the project. The Nizam Sagar Dam was built in 1923 under the patronage of Mir Osman Ali Khan, the ruler of the former state of Hyderabad.
The region is famous for its incredible scenic beauty. Much of this is attributed to a beautiful garden at the project site which acts as a major attraction for tourists. The garden also has a swimming pool for the entertainment of tourists. The Nizam Sagar project authorities have also set up boating facilities for tourists. Well-equipped motorboats are available for a leisurely ride on the cool, serene waters of the lake.
Several guesthouses and inns present on the project site ensure that tourists do not have to worry about their accommodation while traveling in the region. These offer tourists basic but comfortable accommodation. The site receives a large number of tourists during the monsoons. Due to its proximity to states like Karnataka and Maharashtra, tourists from both states form a large percentage of the visitor crowd. However, the dam is also a favorite destination for local tourists. Visitors from neighboring districts like Medak, Karimnagar and Hyderabad also love to unwind and relax in the pleasant atmosphere of Nizam Sagar Lake.
