Sri Neelakanteshwara Swamy Temple is a 500 years old temple dedicated to Shiva, located in Kanteshwar Colony, Nizamabad, Telangana. Here Shiva is in Linga form and is Swayambhu. The main deity Shiva is worshipped as Neelakanteshwara due to the presence of blue throat. This temple is famous for its stunning architecture.
According to history, Kanteshwar Temple was constructed by the Satavahana king Satakarni II for the Jains. Later during the Kakatiya period, the temple was converted to a Shiva temple. The structure resembles the nagara architecture. The artwork on the walls and pillars of the temple represents the great architectural history.
There is also a Dakshinamukhi Anjaneya Swamy outside the temple. Normally Aanjaneya faces east, but he is supposed to face south here because Sita Devi was in Lanka at the time, says chief priest Suhas Shakai.
There is also a legend that says that the Sun rays fall on the Shiva Linga only on Rathasaptami Day (Chariot ceremony).
On Kanteshwar Jatara a large number of devotees throng to the temple for the darshan of the chariot. Shivaratri is another important festival celebrated here.
