Chamundi or Chamunda Mata temple is situated at the top of the Chotila Mountain in Taleti, Chotila Taluka, Surendranagar, Gujarat. Chotila Mountain is approximately 1,250 feet high and is located approximately 40 miles from Rajkot and 50 miles from Ahmedabad. This Chamunda Devi is the Isht Devi of the royal family and the temple is located in the outskirt of the city inside Mehrangarh Fort. Devotees have to climb up to 700 stone-made steps to reach the temple.
The founder of Jodhpur, Rao Jodha brought the idol of his favorite goddess Chamunda Devi from the old capital of Mandore in 1460. He installed the idol of Chamunda Devi in the Mehrangarh fort and since then Chamunda became his divinity. The idol of Chamunda is black or red in most Indian temples where the goddess is worshiped. She wears a garland of severed heads or skulls called mundamala.
Dussehra is the main festival here, a huge number of devotees from in and around Jodhpur gather here to see the feast. The Mehrangarh fort will be fully filled with devotees. Best season to visit the temple is from September to February.
