According to legend, Nithiruvar and Vedigai did not have children for many years and went on a pilgrimage. After arriving in Thirukarugavur, Vedhikai realized that she was pregnant. The couple stayed there with the feeling that this was due to divine blessings. One day, she was in a faint state due to the strain of pregnancy. At this moment, a sage by the name of Sri. Urdhuvapada came to her abode and asked for alms. Due to her unconscious state of mind, she did not notice the sage. Angered Sage curses the couple as the pregnancy will be terminated. The couple prayed for the goddess. Goddess delighted and saved the fetus. Goddess safeguarded the fetus and blessed the couple with a healthy and beautiful child. Hence the goddess is called Garbarakshambigai, which means “one who protects the fetus from all probability”.
