According to legend, Nithiruvar and Vedigai did not have children for many years and went on a pilgrimage. After arriving in Thirukarugavur, Vedhikai realized that she was a pregnent. The couple stayed there with the feeling that this is due to the divine blessings. One day, she was in a faint state due to the strain of pregnancy. At this moment, a sage by name Sri.Urdhuvapada came to her abode and asked for alms. Due to her unconscious state of mind, she did not noticed the sage. Angered Sage curses the couple as the pregnancy will be terminated. The couple prayed for the goddess. Goddess delighted and saved the fetus. Goddess safeguard the foetus and blessed the couple with a healthy and beuatiful child. Hence the goddess called by Garbarakshambigai, which means “one who protects the fetus from all probability”.

Sri Garbarakshambigai Sameta Shri Mullaivana Nathar temple is dedicated to Lord Siva and Goddess Parvati. Lord Siva as Mullaivananathar and Goddess as Garbarakshambigai Amman. Childless Couples perform Ghee Prasadam Pooja to conceive. Pregnant women used to perform Castor Oil Prasadam Pooja for Safe and Trouble free delivery.
