A well-known saint by the name of Guru Ravidas who lived during the period of 1377 to 1527 C.E created a great impression with his eloquent verses and songs of devotion towards the Bhakti Movement. His other monikers included names such as Raidas, Rohidas as well as Ruhidas.
His birthplace is Mandhuadhe situated in the holy city of Varanasi, UP state. While there are contradictions with regard to his year of birth as some scholars are of the opinion that Guru Ruhidas was born in 1399, it is said that the erstwhile saint was born on the auspicious Purnima day of Magha month, a reason why the birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas is celebrated on this particular day and is earmarked on the Hindu calendar.
