The four days Sammakka Saralamma jatara, also known as Telangana’s Kumbh Mela, is a Asia’s biggest tribal fair. Millions of worshipers from Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu and Telangana have set up temporary tents less than two kilometers from the small town of Medaram.
On Tuesday, tribal priests performed rituals for Pagididdaraju, the husband of the deity Sammakka, in the village of Punugondla in Gangaram Mandal, in the district of Mahabubad. Priests entered regions about 40 km away on foot.
On Wednesday evening, Kaka Saraiah, the hereditary priest will perform rituals for Saralamma in the village of Kannepally. Devotees offer jaggery to the deity during the ritual. The ritual is accompanied by a traditional Koya dance.
Authorities have established a 2 km long bathing ghat with a battery of taps. Some 8,900 temporary toilets were also installed to prevent open defecation during the festival. A temporary bus terminal has also been established in Medaram, and the RTC operates 4,200 buses from the state of Telangana. One of the highlights of the jatara will be the plastic-free celebrations.
The The Telangana State Tourism Development Corporation (TSTDC) launched the helicopter service from Hyderabad to Medaram at a cost of 30,000 rupees for each passenger. For local pilgrims, a helicopter tour will be planned for sightseeing for 3,000 rupees.
Meanwhile, Governor Tamilsai Soundararajan and Chief Minister K.Chandrasekhar Rao are scheduled to visit the congregation on February 7. The Sammakka-Saralamma Tadwai mandal is in Mulugu district, where the authorities have announced a 3 day leave.
The South Central Railway will operate 20 special trains for this festival. Most trains will run between Sirpur-Kagaznagar in Warangal and Secundrabad in Warangal.
