Ganagapur Dattatreya Temple History:

According to legend, the sage Atri performed strict penance for years and his powers grew so much that flames began to erupt from his Jatas. Sri Vishnu, Lord Siva and Lord Brahma appeared before him and asked him what he wanted. Atri asked for a son who had Gunas from all the Gods. He was promised that in the second part of the Yuga of the Vaivaswat Manvantar, children would be born to him, that they would be incarnations of themselves. Consequently, in due time, Anasuya gave birth to a number of children, the number said to be ten or three, at any rate, three of the children being the Amshas or parts o part incarnations of the three gods. The first son Soma was an Avatar of Brahma, the second Datta was Sri Vishnu and the third Durvasa that of Shiva. Dattatreya performed strict penances to attain ‘True Knowledge’. He performed penance for hundreds of years on the banks of the Gomati river and acquired Satya Gnyana.
