Pooradam is the eighth day of the ten-day-long carnival of Onam. This day is very significant in the Onam festivities. The devotees create clay idols in the shape of small pyramids called a Ma. Since the idols are created on Pooradam day, they are also known as Poorada Uttigal. Each Ma or Poorada Uttigal is decorated with flowers.
On Pooradam, the Attha Poo [Pookalam] increases in dimensions with additional design with a different flower. People go for hectic last minute shopping at this time. They strive to materialise their creative plans. Everyone cleans their homes to ensure that everything looks neat and tidy when Onathappan arrives. Also, people visit friends and relatives to exchange warm greetings of the Onam festive occasion.
