Vishagam or Visakam is the fourth day of the Onam festivities. The number of days left for the big Onam festival is very few. Hence, the excitement becomes palpable amongst the people of Kerala. On Visakam, there are brisk activities in the market place. Even in the households, people are extremely busy with various activities.
On Visakam, women, who prepare the elaborate meal, Onasadya on Thiruvonam, engage in prior preparations. They make various types of pickles and pappadams [papad] as well as other various things.
Girls engage themselves in creating new designs for Pookalam. They add fresh flowers of different colours and shapes. This is an endearing sight to watch women in their traditional clothes working on Pookalam. Women sing and make merry while shaping the Pookalam in a creative manner. There are extremely popular Pookalam designing competitions held at various places of Kerala. These competitions are attended by a large number of designers and onlookers.
