Sri Prathyangira Devi Avarana Puja – Laghu (Short Version)

Sri Prathyangira Devi Avarana Puja Sanskrit and English:

Prologue :-

All tantra sādhanas involve the worship of the deity, through the form of a yantra (maṇḍala). The yantras are sacred geometric diagrams, that are deemed to represent the japa sādhana deity, at the very center, covered by other deities. The deities of the coverings (āvaraṇa-s), are usually at the corners or centers, of intersecting geometric figures. The pīṭha (pedestal) and āvaraṇa puja-s are performed during the mantra Japa, after the dhyāna (meditation) verse. The pūjas are for worshipping the yantra of śrī pratyaṅgirā Devi, to bestow Her grace on the mantra Japa and sādhana. Pīṭha represents the table or stool, upon which the yantra is placed. Usually, the yantra is placed on a red or yellow cloth.

It is very important to note, that the directions mentioned on yantras related to tantra sadhana are not necessarily the same as their geographical equivalents. In tantra, the directions for deities can be different from the geographical notation and it also varies by the gender of the deity. In general, For male deities, the East direction is the geographical South and for female deities, it’s the geographical North. For śrī vidyā related deities, the East is usually on the geographical north. One may choose to sit facing the geographical East direction so that the East end of the yantra is facing away from the devotee. This puja has been documented with this assumption.

Before starting the pūja, ensure that you have a brass plate, some water in a jug or a container, as well as a disposable container for the water. Another viśeṣa arghya (special water container) vessel should also be kept ready for the tarpaṇa (oblation) ritual. Keep some flower petals, kumkum (red powder), clarified butter or ghee, clean cloth and some unbroken rice (akṣata-s) ready as well. A spoon (uttaraṇi), should be handy for the tarpaṇa. This should be done in a similar manner as the śrī cakra āvaraṇa pūja. The flower petals can be placed from the left hand and the tarpaṇa from the right hand. Internal worship can also be done by those, who’re unable to perform in a ritualistic manner. A lamp can be lit and incense shown to the deity as part of the puja ritual.

Yantra Pranapratistha Vidhih ( यन्त्र प्राणप्रतिष्ठाविधिः ) :

This is a one-time activity done to activate the Yantra or to infuse the Yantra with the Prana. Place the yantra on a brass plate/mug and wash (abhiṣekam) the yantra with ghee (clarified butter) and milk or with the five-ingredient pañcāmṛta. Scrub with a clean cloth.

Recite the following mantras –

oṃ aim̐ hrīm̐ śrīm̐ pratyaṅgire mama rakṣa rakṣa mama śatrūn bhakṣa bhakṣa svāhā āsurekhe vajrarekhe hum̐ phaṭ svāhā ।

ॐ ऐँ ह्रीँ श्रीँ प्रत्यङ्गिरे मम रक्ष रक्ष मम शत्रून् भक्ष भक्ष स्वाहा आसुरेखे वज्ररेखे हुँ फट् स्वाहा ।

Place the yantra in the center of the pīṭha (pedestal) for the pratiṣṭhā (installation of the yantra). For infusing life (prāṇa pratiṣṭhā) into the yantra, the following mantras need to be recited –

oṃ ām̐ hrīm̐ krom̐ yam̐ ram̐ lam̐ vam̐ śam̐ ṣam̐ sam̐ ham̐ ḻam̐ kṣam̐ so’haṃ haṃsaḥ śrīmadpratyaṅgirādevatāyā bindu-trikoṇāṣṭa-koṇāṣṭadala-trivṛtta-bhūpura-trayātmaka yantrasya sajīvavāṅmanaścakṣuḥ śrotraghrāṇaprāṇāḥ ihāgatya sukhaṃ ciraṃ tiṣṭhantu svāhā ।

ॐ आँ ह्रीँ क्रोँ यँ रँ लँ वँ शँ षँ सँ हँ ळँ क्षँ सोऽहं हंसः श्रीमद्प्रत्यङ्गिरादेवताया बिन्दु-त्रिकोणाष्ट-कोणाष्टदल-त्रिवृत्त-भूपुर-त्रयात्मक यन्त्रस्य सजीववाङ्मनश्चक्षुः श्रोत्रघ्राणप्राणाः इहागत्य सुखं चिरं तिष्ठन्तु स्वाहा ।

oṃ ām̐ hrīm̐ krom̐ yam̐ ram̐ lam̐ vam̐ śam̐ ṣam̐ sam̐ ham̐ ḻam̐ kṣam̐ so’haṃ haṃsaḥ śrīmad-pratyaṅgirā-devatāyā saprivārāyā sāvaraṇāyā sāṅgāyā sahitāyā bindu-trikoṇāṣṭa-koṇāṣṭadala-trivṛtta-bhūpura-trayātmaka yantrasya prāṇāḥ iha prāṇāḥ ।

ॐ आँ ह्रीँ क्रोँ यँ रँ लँ वँ शँ षँ सँ हँ ळँ क्षँ सोऽहं हंसः श्रीमद्प्रत्यङ्गिरादेवताया सप्रिवाराया सावरणाया साङ्गाया सहिताया बिन्दु-त्रिकोणाष्ट-कोणाष्टदल-त्रिवृत्त-भूपुर-त्रयात्मक यन्त्रस्य प्राणाः इह प्राणाः ।

oṃ ām̐ hrīm̐ krom̐ yam̐ ram̐ lam̐ vam̐ śam̐ ṣam̐ sam̐ ham̐ ḻam̐ kṣam̐ so’haṃ haṃsaḥ śrīmad-pratyaṅgirā-devatāyā saparivārāyā sāvaraṇāyā sāṅgāyā sahitāyā bindu-trikoṇāṣṭa-koṇāṣṭadala-trivṛtta-bhūpura-trayātmaka yantrasya jīva iha sthitaḥ ।

ॐ आँ ह्रीँ क्रोँ यँ रँ लँ वँ शँ षँ सँ हँ ळँ क्षँ सोऽहं हंसः श्रीमद्प्रत्यङ्गिरादेवताया सपरिवाराया सावरणाया साङ्गाया सहिताया बिन्दु-त्रिकोणाष्ट-कोणाष्टदल-त्रिवृत्त-भूपुर-त्रयात्मक यन्त्रस्य जीव इह स्थितः ।

oṃ ām̐ hrīm̐ krom̐ yam̐ ram̐ lam̐ vam̐ śam̐ ṣam̐ sam̐ ham̐ ḻam̐ kṣam̐ so’haṃ haṃsaḥ śrīmad-pratyaṅgirā-devatāyā bindu-trikoṇāṣṭa-koṇāṣṭadala-trivṛtta-bhūpura-trayātmaka yantrasya sarvendriyāṇivāṅmanścakṣuḥ śrotra-jivhāgrāṇa-pāṇipāda-pāyū-pasthāni ihaivāgatya sukhaṃ ciraṃ tiṣṭantu svāhā ।

ॐ आँ ह्रीँ क्रोँ यँ रँ लँ वँ शँ षँ सँ हँ ळँ क्षँ सोऽहं हंसः श्रीमद्प्रत्यङ्गिरादेवताया बिन्दु-त्रिकोणाष्ट-कोणाष्टदल-त्रिवृत्त-भूपुर-त्रयात्मक यन्त्रस्य सर्वेन्द्रियाणिवाङ्मन्श्चक्षुः श्रोत्र-जिव्हाग्राण-पाणिपाद-पायू-पस्थानि इहैवागत्य सुखं चिरं तिष्टन्तु स्वाहा ।

Now, meditate upon śrī pratyaṅgirā devi using the following Dhyana Sloka :–

Dhyanam (ध्यानम्):

oṃ raktābdhipot-āruṇa-padma-saṃsthāṃ pāśāṅkuś-eṣvāsaśarā’si-bāṇān,

śūlaṃ kapālaṃ dadhataṃ karābjaiḥ raktāṃ trinetrāṃ praṇamāmi devīm ।

pāśāścāpāsṛkkapāle ṛṇīṣūcchūlaṃ hastairvibhratīṃ raktavarṇām,

raktodnvatpotaraktāmbujasthāṃ devīṃ dhyāyetprāṇaśaktiṃ trinetrām ॥ 1 ॥

ॐ रक्ताब्धिपोतारुणपद्मसंस्थां पाशाङ्कुशेष्वासशराऽसिबाणान्,

शूलं कपालं दधतं कराब्जैः रक्तां त्रिनेत्रां प्रणमामि देवीम् ।

पाशाश्चापासृक्कपाले ऋणीषूच्छूलं हस्तैर्विभ्रतीं रक्तवर्णाम्,

रक्तोद्न्वत्पोतरक्ताम्बुजस्थां देवीं ध्यायेत्प्राणशक्तिं त्रिनेत्राम् ॥ १ ॥

śaraṇye varaṇye sukāruṇyapūrṇe hiraṇyodarādyairagamyetipuṇye ।

bhavāraṇyabhītaṃ ca māṃ pāhi bhadre namaste namaste namaste bhavāni ॥ 2 ॥

शरण्ये वरण्ये सुकारुण्यपूर्णे हिरण्योदराद्यैरगम्येतिपुण्ये ।

भवारण्यभीतं च मां पाहि भद्रे नमस्ते नमस्ते नमस्ते भवानि ॥ २ ॥

We meditate upon the Devi as red in color, three-eyed, holding an elephant goad, a rope, an arrow, a trident, a skull dripping with blood, full of life and radiant in appearance.

Avarana Puja (आवरण पूज):

The yantra of śrī pratyaṅgirā Devi in Devanāgari is below. The correlation in IAST is also indicated in the table below. The numbers indicated represent the location of the āvaraṇa deities. :-

Using the direction format of the śrī pūjā, worship the āvaraṇa-s. Sit facing the Eastern direction and the top of the yantra is now facing the Eastern direction, with the bottom facing the west and ourselves.

1. Starting from the bhūpura (gates) the first āvaraṇa is worshipped, consisting of the direction lords for all the 10 directions, including top and bottom. Flowers or flower petals from the left hand and the water from the right hand can be used for worshipping the yantra. Pūja is with the flowers and tarpaṇa is with water.

bhaktyā samarpaye tubhyaṃ pratham-āvaraṇārcanaṃ ॥

अभीष्ट सिद्धिं मे देहि शरणागत वत्सल ।

भक्त्या समर्पये तुभ्यं प्रथमावरणार्चनं ॥

पूजिता स्तर्पिताः सन्तु

2. Now worship the weapons of the directional lords, starting from east (śrī pūjā format) in all the 10 directions, pray to the 10 weapons (astra-s) with the following mantras:-

bhaktyā samarpaye tubhyaṃ dvitīy-āvaraṇārcanaṃ ॥

अभीष्ट सिद्धिं मे देहि शरणागत वत्सल ।

भक्त्या समर्पये तुभ्यं द्वितीयावरणार्चनं ॥

पूजिता स्तर्पिताः सन्तु

3. Now worship the various gurus in the stated positions of the three outer circles, as depicted on the yantra.

bhaktyā samarpaye tubhyaṃ tritīy-āvaraṇārcanaṃ ॥

अभीष्ट सिद्धिं मे देहि शरणागत वत्सल ।

भक्त्या समर्पये तुभ्यं त्रितीयावरणार्चनं ॥

Hold a flower for bali and utter the mantra:-

pūjitā starpitāḥ santu

पूजिता स्तर्पिताः सन्तु

4. on the lotus petals between the 4th and 5th circles, worship the 8 Bhairava-s. starting from the east, as depicted on the yantra (deva – pūjā format).

Offer flowers with the mantra:-

bhaktyā samarpaye tubhyaṃ chaturth-āvaraṇārcanaṃ ॥

अभीष्ट सिद्धिं मे देहि शरणागत वत्सल ।

भक्त्या समर्पये तुभ्यं चतुर्थावरणार्चनं ॥

Hold a flower for bali and utter the mantra:-

pūjitā starpitāḥ santu

पूजिता स्तर्पिताः सन्तु

5. Similarly, on the ends of the petals meeting the enclosing maṇḍala circle, the 8 Mothers representing the aṣṭa mātṛka-s must be worshipped. Starting from the east, as depicted on the yantra (deva pūjā format)

abhīṣṭa siddhiṃ me dehi śaraṇāgata vatsala ।

bhaktyā samarpaye tubhyaṃ pañcam-āvaraṇārcanaṃ ॥

अभीष्ट सिद्धिं मे देहि शरणागत वत्सल ।

भक्त्या समर्पये तुभ्यं पञ्चमावरणार्चनं ॥

pūjitā starpitāḥ santu

पूजिता स्तर्पिताः सन्तु

6. Now worship the 8 pīṭha-s at the junctions of the petals, where two consecutive petals meet, starting from the west, as depicted on the yantra (śrī pūjā format).

offer flowers with the mantra:-

abhīṣṭa siddhiṃ me dehi śaraṇāgata vatsala ।

bhaktyā samarpaye tubhyaṃ ṣaṣṭam-āvaraṇārcanaṃ ॥

अभीष्ट सिद्धिं मे देहि शरणागत वत्सल ।

भक्त्या समर्पये तुभ्यं षष्टमावरणार्चनं ॥

पूजिता स्तर्पिताः सन्तु

7. Now worship the 10 Bhairava-s within the 5th circle maṇḍala, starting from the East, as depicted on the yantra (deva pūjā format).

offer flowers with the mantra:-

abhīṣṭa siddhiṃ me dehi śaraṇāgata vatsala ।

bhaktyā samarpaye tubhyaṃ saptam-āvaraṇārcanaṃ ॥

अभीष्ट सिद्धिं मे देहि शरणागत वत्सल ।

भक्त्या समर्पये तुभ्यं सप्तमावरणार्चनं ॥

pūjitā starpitāḥ santu

पूजिता स्तर्पिताः सन्तु

8. Now worship the 8 yoginī-s within the 8 triangles formed at the intersection of the two squares within the innermost 6th circle maṇḍala. Starting from the East, as depicted on the yantra (deva pūjā format).

offer flowers with the mantra:-

abhīṣṭa siddhiṃ me dehi śaraṇāgata vatsala ।

bhaktyā samarpaye tubhyaṃ aṣṭam-āvaraṇārcanaṃ ॥

अभीष्ट सिद्धिं मे देहि शरणागत वत्सल ।

भक्त्या समर्पये तुभ्यं अष्टमावरणार्चनं ॥

पूजिता स्तर्पिताः सन्तु

9. Now worship the nyāsa-s around the innermost inverted triangle maṇḍala. Starting from the East, as depicted on the yantra (deva pūjā format).

abhīṣṭa siddhiṃ me dehi śaraṇāgata vatsala ।

bhaktyā samarpaye tubhyaṃ navam-āvaraṇārcanaṃ ॥

अभीष्ट सिद्धिं मे देहि शरणागत वत्सल ।

भक्त्या समर्पये तुभ्यं नवमावरणार्चनं

पूजिता स्तर्पिताः सन्तु

10. Now worship the 3 Kāli devi-s at the corners of the innermost inverted triangle maṇḍala. Starting from the West, as depicted on the yantra (śrī pūjā format).

offer flowers with the mantra:-

abhīṣṭa siddhiṃ me dehi śaraṇāgata vatsala ।

bhaktyā samarpaye tubhyaṃ daśam-āvaraṇārcanaṃ ॥

अभीष्ट सिद्धिं मे देहि शरणागत वत्सल ।

भक्त्या समर्पये तुभ्यं दशमावरणार्चनं ॥

pūjitā starpitāḥ santu

पूजिता स्तर्पिताः सन्तु

11. At the very center of the yantra, worship the bindu with the root mūla mantra, followed by the mantra to worship śrī pratyaṅgirā along with śrī bhairava.

om̐ hrīm̐ kṣam̐ bhakṣa jvālā jihve karāla daṃṣṭre pratyaṅgire kṣam̐ hrīm̐ hum̐ phaṭ ।

ॐ ह्रीँ क्षँ भक्ष ज्वाला जिह्वे कराल दंष्ट्रे प्रत्यङ्गिरे क्षँ ह्रीँ हुँ फट् ।

80. om̐ aim̐ hrīm̐ śrīm̐ śrī bhairava sahitāṃ śrīmat śrī pratyaṅgirā parāvāmā śrī pādukāṃ pūjayāmi tarpayāmi namaḥ ।

ॐ ऐँ ह्रीँ श्रीँ श्री भैरव सहितां श्रीमत् श्री प्रत्यङ्गिरा परावामा श्री पादुकां पूजयामि तर्पयामि नमः ।

offer flowers with the mantra:-

abhīṣṭa siddhiṃ me dehi śaraṇāgata vatsala ।

bhaktyā samarpaye tubhyaṃ ekādaśam-āvaraṇārcanaṃ ॥

अभीष्ट सिद्धिं मे देहि शरणागत वत्सल ।

भक्त्या समर्पये तुभ्यं एकादशमावरणार्चनं ॥

pūjitā starpitāḥ santu

पूजिता स्तर्पिताः सन्तु

12. Now once again at the pericarp of the bhūpura (gates), worship the various deities. Starting from the West, as depicted on the yantra (śrī pūjā format).

offer flowers with the mantra:-

abhīṣṭa siddhiṃ me dehi śaraṇāgata vatsala ।

bhaktyā samarpaye tubhyaṃ dvādaśam-āvaraṇārcanaṃ ॥

अभीष्ट सिद्धिं मे देहि शरणागत वत्सल ।

भक्त्या समर्पये तुभ्यं द्वादशावरणार्चनं ॥

pūjitā starpitāḥ santu

पूजिता स्तर्पिताः सन्तु

13. Finally, near the Devi at the bindu (center of the yantra), worship Her skin and complexion as well as Devi Herself and offer flowers to the Devi thrice, along with various mudras and tarpaNa water.

89. om̐ aim̐ hrīm̐ śrīm̐ asite namaḥ śrī pādukāṃ pūjayāmi tarpayāmi namaḥ ।

ॐ ऐँ ह्रीँ श्रीँ असिते नमः श्री पादुकां पूजयामि तर्पयामि नमः ।

90. om̐ aim̐ hrīm̐ śrīm̐ carmāya namaḥ śrī pādukāṃ pūjayāmi tarpayāmi namaḥ ।

ॐ ऐँ ह्रीँ श्रीँ चर्माय नमः श्री पादुकां पूजयामि तर्पयामि नमः ।

om̐ hrīm̐ kṣam̐ bhakṣa jvālā jihve karāla daṃṣṭre pratyaṅgire kṣam̐ hrīm̐ hum̐ phaṭ ।

ॐ ह्रीँ क्षँ भक्ष ज्वाला जिह्वे कराल दंष्ट्रे प्रत्यङ्गिरे क्षँ ह्रीँ हुँ फट् ।

80. om̐ aim̐ hrīm̐ śrīm̐ śrī bhairava sahitāṃ śrīmat śrī pratyaṅgirā parāvāmā śrī pādukāṃ pūjayāmi tarpayāmi namaḥ ।

ॐ ऐँ ह्रीँ श्रीँ श्री भैरव सहितां श्रीमत् श्री प्रत्यङ्गिरा परावामा श्री पादुकां पूजयामि तर्पयामि नमः ।

offer flowers with the mantra:-

abhīṣṭa siddhiṃ me dehi śaraṇāgata vatsala ।

bhaktyā samarpaye tubhyaṃ trayodaśam-āvaraṇārcanaṃ ॥

अभीष्ट सिद्धिं मे देहि शरणागत वत्सल ।

भक्त्या समर्पये तुभ्यं त्रयोदशावरणार्चनं ॥
