Pratyangira Devi

Pratyangira Yantra Avarana Puja and Homa (Detailed Version) in Sanskrit and English

॥ Pratyangira Yantra Avarana Puja Homam ॥

Prologue:-

All tantra sadhanas involve the worship of the deity, through the form of a yantra (mandala). The yantras are sacred geometric diagrams, that are deemed to represent the japa sadhana deity, at the very centre, covered by other deities. The deities of the coverings (avarana-s), are usually at the corners or centres, of intersecting geometric figures. Worshipping the avarana deities helps unlock the power of the mantra as well as that of the main deity. It is therefore considered as an essential part of mantra sadhana and is recommended to be worshipped on a daily basis if time permits. An alternate to avarana pūja, is the Khadgamala stotram.

The pītha (pedestal) and avarana pūja-s are performed during the mantra japa, after the dhyana (meditation) verse. The pūjas are for worshipping the yantra of śrī pratyaṅgira Devi, to bestow Her grace on the mantra japa and sadhana. Pītha represents the table or stool, upon which the yantra is placed. Usually, the yantra is placed on a red or yellow cloth.

It is very important to note, that the directions mentioned on yantras related to tantra sadhana, are not necessarily the same as their geographical equivalents. In tantra, the directions for deities can be different from the geographical notation and it also varies by the gender of the deity. In general, For male deities, the East direction is the geographical South; and for female deities, it’s the geographical North. For śrī vidya related deities, the East is usually on the geographical north. One may choose to sit facing the geographical East direction so that the East end of the yantra is facing away from the devotee. This puja has been documented with this assumption.

Please follow the enumerated corners in the yantra, for each of the avarana deities. The pītha devatas are not represented on the yantra, since the yantra itself is placed on the pītha. We need to establish the proper vessels called kalaśa-s, invoke Lord Varuna and establish the Viśesa arghya vessel, prior to the start of the avarana pūja. Following which, the pītha devatas are worshipped and established on the pedestal first. One must imagine the pītha to be divided into various segments to accommodate the enlisted deities. Following the worship of the pītha devatas, one must worship the three mandala-s of Agni/Fire, Sūrya/Sun and Candra/Moon. These mandala-s should be imagined to be at the top of the pītha and through their worship, the place where the yantra will be placed, is further sanctified and energized. Following the mandala-s, the pītha śakti-s are invoked to grant various types of victories to the devotee, worshipping the yantra. Finally, the yantra is placed on the pedestal (pītha) and the life-infusing pranapratistha mantras are invoked to energize the yantra. After which, the dhyana shloka is recited and the avarana pūja begins. It is to be noted that the pedestal worship and the life-infusing ritual are a one-time activity and need not be performed on a regular basis.

Before starting the pūja, ensure that you have a brass plate, some water in a jug or a container, as well as a disposable container for the water. Vessels for Karana kalaśa, samanya arghya and viśesa arghya. For viśesa kalaśa, a uttarani (this is like a small spoon, but with more depth to hold water and is always placed inside pañcapatra, which is like a round mug). For samanya arghya, a conch with a base (ideally in the form of a tortoise) is required. For viśesa arghya another pañcapatra, preferably in silver or copper is required. A tweezer is also required and this tweezer should be either made of silver or copper. This is meant to perform tarpana. Instead of a tweezer, a thin silver rod is used with spikes on one side and a very small uttarani like structure that can hold one or two drops of viśesa arghya can also be used. Keep some flower petals, kuṅkum (red powder), clarified butter or ghee, clean cloth and some unbroken rice (aksata-s) ready as well. A spoon (uddharani), should be handy for the tarpana. This should be done in a similar manner as the śrī cakra avarana pūja. The flower petals can be placed from the left hand and the tarpana from the right hand. A cut piece of ginger is required for the tarpana process. Some fragrance, oil, incense, lamps should also be kept available. Food offerings such as meat, wine, fish etc. (pañcamakara) or their substitutes should be kept ready as well. Internal worship can also be done by those, who’re unable to perform in a ritualistic manner. At least one lamp can be lit and incense shown to the deity as part of the puja ritual.

Śrī Pratyaṅgira Devi Homam is a fire ritual that is often employed when facing insurmountable challenges, black magic and severe enmity from opponents. This ritual employs using red chilies to help get rid of enemies and all negativities.

Both homam and avarana pūja can be done separately. Mantra japa combined with avarana pūja fetches quick results. Homam combined with avarana pūja is also the best way of performing the ritual to get maximum benefits. One must consider it if initiated into Her mantras.

For the homam, the following mūla mantra has been given as an example. One should use the mantra they are initiated into, for both the avarana pūja and homam.

om̐ hrīm̐ ksam̐ bhaksa jvala jihve karaladamstre pratyaṅgire ksam̐ hrīm̐ hum̐ phat

We start with the avarana pūja and then proceed to homam.

At the very beginning, worshipping of Lord Ganeśa is mandated, to help us gain success in all our undertakings, that includes this ritual as well.

3. Dhyanam

Meditate upon the Divine Mother Pratyaṅgira devi and merge in Her at the heart cakra.

ūrdhvam kapalam damarum triśūlam sambibhratī baddha kalavatamsam ।

piṅgordhva kauśī sītabhīmadamstra bhūya dvibhūtyai mamabhadrakalī ॥

Meditate on the Divine Mother Bhadrakali Pratyaṅgira devi, holding a cup, skull, a drum and a trident with loosened hair and dark complexion. She a wide gaping mouth and extremely terrific in form.

4. Kalaśa sthapana (कलश स्थापन) –

Kalaśa is a water vessel of great importance in pūja and meant to represent the entire universe within it. In the context of śrī pratyaṅgira devi, we establish the various patra-s (vessels) by following the below procedures –

a. Samanarghya

Meditate on śrī pratyaṅgira devi, perform Her upacara-s (offering bath, dress, food, lights, fragrance etc.) mentally, perform a few recitations of Her root mūla mantra and also meditate upon the meaning and significance of the Kamakala bīja īm̐.

om̐ hrīm̐ ksam̐ bhaksa jvala jihve karaladamstre pratyaṅgire ksam̐ hrīm̐ hum̐ phat

To our left, create a śatkona (hexagram) resembling a star-of-David with a bindu (dot) at the centre. Draw a circle outside the hexagram and a triangle within the hexagram. Also, draw a square enclosing the circle. To our right, create a triangle, a circle around it and a square encompassing the circle. Please a plank or any other support base for the Kalaśa. This plank is called an adhara (support). Now invoke the adhara śakti by meditating upon Her (om̐ adhara śaktibhyo namaḥ) and invoke the bīja am̐ and place the water vessel (conch) upon the plank, once again invoking the ‘hrn’ mantra for purifying the water contained in the vessel. Add some Ganges water if available, place sandal paste and red unguent (kumkum) reciting the pranava mantra om̐. One can also worship the Sun, Moon, Fire deities and other kalas (phases of the moon), show the dhenu mudra, recite any śrī pratyaṅgira devi mantra, to establish the Kalaśa and make it a general arghya (ablution) vessel, which is also termed as samanarghya (conch shell designated for this purpose). Take some water from the conch using an uddharani (which is like a spoon with a deeper trough to hold more water) and transfer to a small container for use in the following procedures.
The following mantra can be invoked to please the powers of all the holy rivers –

gaṅge ca yamune caiva godavarī sarasvati narmade sindhu kaveri jalesmin sannidhim kuru

b. Viśesa kalaśa –

Once the samanarghya is established, sprinkle water on the left and once again adore the vahni (agni) mandala with the following mantra worshipping all the deities contained within. The Viśesa Kalaśa can now be placed on the plank – adhara.

ram̐ vahni mandalaya daśa kalatmane namaḥ

Reciting the phat (फट्) mantra, purify the Kalaśa, pour water inside it, adorn with silk clothes around the vessel, flowers etc. and invite Devi to establish Herself at the centre. The Arka (Sun) and Soma (Moon) mandala-s are now invoked with the following mantras –

For Sun mandala –

am̐ arka mandalaya dvadaśa kalatmane namaḥ

For Moon mandala –

o candra mandalaya sodaśa kalatmane namaḥ

Now pray to the Divine Mother and offer simple pūja with flowers, rice grains (aksata-s). Now display the avagunthana mudra (move the index finger with the other fingers closed, in a circle) around the Kalaśa, indicating protection by the Divine Mother, using the mantra ‘hum̐’ (हुँ). Now recite the śrī pratyaṅgira devi mūla (root) mantra that one is initiated into (preferably the maha pratyaṅgira devi mantra), by looking at the Kalaśa for sometime.

om̐ hrīm̐ ksam̐ bhaksa jvala jihve karaladamstre pratyaṅgire ksam̐ hrīm̐ hum̐ phat

Following which, sprinkle water around the Kalaśa, reciting the ‘namaḥ’ mantra. Place some sandal paste reciting the śrī pratyaṅgira devi mūla (root) mantra,

om̐ hrīm̐ ksam̐ bhaksa jvala jihve karaladamstre pratyaṅgire ksam̐ hrīm̐ hum̐ phat

also some flowers on the vessel and pray to the Divine Mother to release us from all sins forthwith! Recite the following mantras thrice, for that purpose –

evameva parabrahma sthūla sūksma mayam druvam

kacodbhavam brahma hatyam tena te naśayamyaham 1

Now meditate upon the forms of Ānanda Bhairava and Sura Bhairavi and recite the following mantras –

hasaksamalavaya om ̐anandabhairavaya vausat

sahaksamalavaya hum̐ sura devyai vausat

Now offer worship at the centre of the Viśesa Kalaśa arghya, along three lines around the centre, in a clockwise manner with the following mantras –

Now hold the Viśesa Kalaśa arghya and draw a triangle, satkona, circle and square between ourselves and the yantra (śrī pratyaṅgira devi yantra or the śrī yantra). The figure should be the same as was done for the samanarghya.

Following which, the pītha-s are worshipped. Four in particular, at the ends of the square from the above diagram.

After which, chanting the ‘vam̐’ Varuna bīja, add water to the same Viśesa vessel placed on the adhara and chant all the matrika-s in the reverse order, from ‘ksam̐’ to ‘am̐’ . From the viśesa arghya vessel, we must do the tarpana. A tweezer holding a piece of peeled ginger is used to dip in the vessel and the water drops are then poured on to a separate plate or on the deity idols or yantras, as directed. For now, a separate plate for water ablutions can be chosen.

8. Āvarana pūja (आवरण पूज) –

The yantra of śrī pratyaṅgira devi in Devanagari is below. The correlation in IAST is also indicated in the table below. The numbers indicated represent the location of the  avarana deities.:-

Directions in the deva pūja Directions in the śrī pūja
SW W NW NE E SE
S N N S
SE E NE NW W SW

Using the direction format of the śrī pūja, worship the Āvarana-s. Sit facing the Eastern direction and the top of the yantra is now facing the Eastern direction, with the bottom facing the west and ourselves.

Note:- The caturtari-s “om̐ aim̐ hrīm̐ śrīm̐” apply only to the Āvarana-s 8, 9 and 10. But references do exist in some texts, for applying them to all the Āvarana-s. For consistency, they have been added to all Āvarana-s. One can follow either of the traditions.

1. Starting from the bhūpura (gates) the first avarana is worshipped, consisting of the direction lords for all the 10 directions, including top and bottom. Flowers or flower petals from the left hand and the water from the right hand can be used for worshipping the yantra. Pūja is with the flowers and tarpana is with water.

  1. Homa prarambham (होम प्रारम्भम्)

The homa of śrī pratyaṅgira begins now. The mūla mantra, with svaha appended must be recited as many times as desired. At least 108 or 1008 or more, if time permits. All the ista kamya dravya-s (wish fulfilling fire ritual supplies) can be mixed with clarified butter (ghee) and put in the fire with each invocation of the mūla mantra, at the time of reciting ‘svaha’. Care should be taken NOT to put too much to make the fire humungous or to fill up the homa kunda to the brim. Use best judgment based on the size of the homa kunda.

In general, yellow sesame seeds, lots of red chillis, havan samagri (powder) packets and if available sticks associated with various planets, cow dung cakes etc. may also be used, based on the size of the homa kunda.

śrī pratyaṅgira devatayai balim samarpayami ।

P. Pūrnahuti (पूर्णाहुति) –

The final offering that is made in the fire is called pūrnahuti, signifying the completion of the homam fire ritual. The following procedures need to be followed –

  1. Recite the below mantra to begin the pūrnahuti process –

pūrnahutim juhomi ।

Take a cloth, wrap up some fruits, flowers, a dry coconut, some fragrance, sandalwood and any other desired materials. The tied up bundle should be considered a devata and salutations must be offered to it. Offer dhūpa, deepam etc. to it, by displaying the pañca pūja mudras.

  1. Pour ghee with offering 12 counts of the mūla mantra with svaha appended, on to the pūrnahuti bundle. This is done with the sruci and sruva ladles placed on each other like previously done.

Now, place the pūrnahuti bundle into the homa kunda, culminating the ritual.

Generally, the fire should become huge at this time. Sometimes, it may not due to the residual and unburnt material inside the homa kunda. We once again offer 25 counts of ajyahuti (selfless) homa offerings of the mūla mantra, with svaha appended.

om̐ hrīm̐ ksam̐ bhaksa jvala jihve karaladamstre pratyaṅgire ksam̐ hrīm̐ hum̐ phat svaha

Another 25 counts of the of ajyahuti (selfless) homa offerings of the mūla mantra, with svaha appended, should be offered to the avarana deities also.

A betel leaf with a large red rice mound or a lemon laced with kuṅkum is placed in the North-Eastern side around the homa kunda. The following śloka is recited for the same and water and aksata-s are offered.
